The Eight Precepts

The Five Precepts

In the context of visiting the Monastery the Five Precepts are the same as the first five of the eight listed below. In daily life the Third Precept is, “I undertake the precept to refrain from sexual misconduct.”

The Eight Precepts

Panatipata veramani sikkhapadam samadiyami ― I undertake the precept to refrain from taking life.

Adinnadana veramani sikkhapadam samadiyami ― I undertake the precept to refrain from stealing.

Abrahmacariya veramani sikkhapadam samadiyami ― I undertake the precept to refrain from sexual activity.

Musavada veramani sikkhapadam samadiyami ― I undertake the precept to refrain from telling lies.

Suramerayamajja pamadatthana veramani sikkhapadam samadiyami ― I undertake the precept to refrain from taking alcohol or intoxicating drugs.

Vikalabhojana veramani sikkhapadam samadiyami ― I undertake the precept to refrain from eating at the wrong time (i.e., after midday and before dawn).

Nacca-gita-vadita-visukkadassana mala-gandha-vilepana-dharana-mandana-vibhusanathana veramani sikkhapadam samadiyami ― I undertake the precept to refrain from dancing, singing, music, watching shows, wearing garlands, using perfumes, and beautifying myself with cosmetics.

Uccasayana-mahasayana veramani sikkhapadam samadiyami ― I undertake the precept to refrain from sitting or lying on high and luxurious seats and beds.
