Support
The Monastery has operated on the economy of gifts since its inception. Please refer to Ajaan Geoff’s articles on No Strings Attached and The Economy of Gifts.
If you would like to make a gift (dana), whether monetary or through physical aid, feel free to ask the monastics or the long-term guests on what is helpful. If you have questions specific to monetary donation, you can direct your questions to mettamonasteryfund@gmail.com.

PayPal
There are two methods of donating to the Monastery via PayPal.
-
PayPal Charitable Giving Fund - This is a mechanism PayPal has set up that allows charitable donations without imposing PayPal’s usual transaction fees. Link: PayPal Giving Fund for Metta Forest Monastery
-
PayPal Regular - This might be the only option for some international donors. PayPal’s base international transfer fees appear to be 5% and domestic, 3%, but you’ll have to look carefully at their policies.
Zelle
The Monastery has enrolled in Zelle, so it is possible to transfer donations without any fees via the Zelle app. The Monastery’s email for transfers via Zelle is mettamonasteryfund@gmail.com. Zelle does not appear to extract any fees and appears to allow automatic recurring payments. Unfortunately, it seems Zelle does not work for international donations.
Specific Funds
Money donated to the monastery has traditionally gone into a general fund which is used to meet any monastery expenses, such as food, water, heating, etc., or to make up a shortfall in any of the dedicated funds.
Currently there are four such dedicated funds: books/dhamma distribution, wilderness refuge, construction, and upasikā.
If you have a preference for where your donation is used, you may indicate it on the memo line or message field provided by the payment method. If you cannot do so, you can email mettamonasteryfund@gmail.com and the volunteers handling the donations will do their best to allocate the donation as indicated.
Tax Deductible Receipts
The Monastery is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization as recognized by the US Internal Revenue Service. US donors filing federal income tax may be able to receive a tax deduction for their donations. if you’re making a donation through PayPal, PayPal should automatically provide a receipt for tax deduction purposes.
You do not need a receipt from the Monastery for contributions under USD$50. We can mail you a receipt for contributions over USD$50 if you provide your name and mailing address preferably at the time of your gift. Alternatively, please make a request to mettamonasteryfund@gmail.com.
Why is this page so hard to find?
The Monastery wants to keep a clear separation between distributing the Dhamma freely in accordance with the Dhamma and any attempt or perceived attempt to solicit donations by having a “Donate” button present on this website.
